Why Shop Seasonally?

Humans are creatures of habit, and market research knows this. Nearly everything we buy goes on sale in cycles. Some of those cycles are annual or seasonal, while others occur every 12 weeks or so.

If you can learn to identify the pattern, you can take advantage of the savings by stocking up on much needed household items when prices hit rock bottom.

For example, when you buy produce seasonally, you get a better nutritional bang for your buck and help out the planet a little bit while you’re at it.

Other items can save you buckets of cash if you just plan ahead a little bit. Whether it’s a lifestyle upgrade, planning for growth spurts, or getting ahead of next holiday season, if you can identify the sales patterns, you can anticipate your needs and buy ahead rather than getting caught off guard later.

Food Items

These food items are the best things to buy in June to help you fill up the pantry (and the emergency food storage) just in time for summer severe weather.

  • Summer staples – As temperatures climb, look for deals on summer staples like ice cream, popsicles, condiments, hot dog and hamburger buns, bbq sauce, and soda. Start stocking up now for backyard barbecue holidays.
  • Iced Tea– June 10th is National Iced Tea day. Keep your eye out for coupons and discounts on this southern summer staple.
  • Dairy products – June is also National Dairy month. If you’ve got the freezer space, now is a good time to buy a few month’s worth of items like milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, butter, sour cream, and whipping cream. Buy in bulk and break down products for long term storage yourself to save even more.
  • Seasonal produce – For many of us, this is the best time to shop for seasonal produce. Nearly everything is in season, so nearly everything is on sale. Keep an eye out for deals on stone fruits, berries, melons, tropical fruits, grapes, peppers, summer squash, corn, and leafy greens. This can also be a great time to hit up a local farmer’s market, pick-your-own-produce farm, co-op, or local produce delivery service to seek out great deals on summer produce.

Holiday Items

Memorial Day might be gone, but there are still June holiday deals to be had.

  • Father’s Day favorites – Father’s Day is one of the biggies in June. Toward the middle of the month, expect to see discounts on men’s clothing and accessories, tools, cologne, and other Father’s Day gift items.
  • Outdoor items – With the height of summer still to come, June is a great time to start watching for sales on hunting and fishing gear, camping equipment, pool toys, kids outdoor toys. The best deals pop up in late fall and early winter, but now is the next best time if you’ve planned a summer adventure this year.

Clothing, Jewelry, and Apparel

Grab spring deals and start stocking up for summer.

  • Spring clothing items – With summer just a few weeks away, retailers are looking to clear shelf space for summer essentials. June is a great month to seek out skirts, sandals, and pieces for layering. You should also keep an eye out for light jackets and rain gear.
  • Swimwear and lingerie – If you need a new swimsuit, find a good deal now. They won’t get cheaper as the temperature rises, and once most places are out, they’re out. If you’re a fan of Victoria’s Secret, this is also usually the month they run their Semi-Annual Sale and steeply discount popular lingerie, makeup, and body care products.
  • Sunglasses – June 27th is National Sunglasses Day, so it’s the perfect time to grab some discounted eye protection for all that outdoor summer fun.

General Household Items

The best things to buy in June for the household line right up with wedding season and Father’s Day.

  • Dinnerware, cookware, and kitchen appliances – Summer is wedding season, so you could get a deal on new kitchen essentials for yourself or newlyweds in your life.
  • Tools – Right before Father’s Day, expect tools and equipment to get cheaper just in time to help you celebrate the special fathers and father figures in your life.

Other Things to Buy In June

These ideas don’t all fit nicely into other categories, or the category is too small to include.

  • Amazon Prime Day Deals – This year, Prime Day runs from June 21 – June 22. Grab deals on clothing, electronics, subscription services, toys, kid and baby items, and more. First, you’ll need a Prime account to take advantage of all the deals. Grab a free trial here if you’re not a member yet.
  • Thrift store finds – Along with spring break, the start of summer is a popular time for folks to clean and declutter their homes. If you’re a thrifter, check in to your favorite spot regularly for deals on second hand scores.

Stock Up on the Best Things to Buy in June

Remember, the goal here is to save money. Try to avoid getting too starry-eyed with buzzwords and sale signage. Buy the things you need and that you’ll use.

There’s no harm in saving a buck along the way, though!

I hope this little list helps you out this month.
