45 Not-So-Scary Kid’s Halloween Movies to Watch in October

You are currently viewing 45 Not-So-Scary Kid’s Halloween Movies to Watch in October

Welcome back to day 4 of Blogtober! I’m so excited to share another day of spooky fun with you. Sometimes, it’s tough to share your love of all things creepy and crawly with children. Fortunately, there are so many great options when it comes to spooky, but not too scary kid’s Halloween movies!

I’ve been sharing pumpkins, skeletons, and spiders with my daughter since she was a baby. I think that’s why she finds most Halloween decorations hilarious and fun.

Now that she’s old enough to start processing and comprehending what’s happening in the shows she watches, I’m on the lookout for some great kid’s Halloween movies that won’t scare the daylights out of her.

These are also all movies that I can actually sit through without feeling like a slasher movie torture victim! Because let’s be honest, you know your kid will just pick one and watch it 30 times in a row anyway.

No clue what I’m talking about when I say Blogtober? Head on back to Blogtober Day 1 or this pre-Blogtober post I wrote, and get caught up.

You Know Your Children Best

A quick note before we begin, you know your child better than I do.

My kid doesn’t get scared of witches and skeletons, but yours might, and that’s okay. Every child has different needs.

When you’re making choices about kid’s Halloween movies, think about your kiddo’s temperament and stage of development. Then, decide accordingly.

Baby Girl loves this eerie compilation of spooky children’s songs, but she’s absolutely terrified of an elephant that smashes a clock in a Hickory Dickory Dock video. As a result, I can let her watch kid friendly monsters and ghouls, but I wouldn’t play her anything that has a big elephant or where clocks are destroyed.

It might be weird, but that’s who she is.

Use your best judgement, and employ your parent gut.

Also, I have not taken the ratings system into account at all here, so if you’re looking for a list of G-rated Halloween movies, this list probably won’t do you much good.

Instead, I’ve pulled a list of my childhood favorites, as well as kid’s Halloween movies my own toddler enjoys.

Little Kid's Halloween Movies

These not-so-scary kid’s Halloween movies work perfectly for younger kids or children who don’t dig the scary scene.

Room on the Broom – 2012

A tv short film that follows along with the children’s story about a witch who keeps losing things as she takes a ride on her broomstick with some animal companions.

Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest – 2013

Curious George goes on an adventure after hearing a story about a scarecrow the steals hats.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit – 2005

While not specifically Halloween, this claymation duo embark on an adventure to uncover who is trying to sabotage the annual giant veggie growing contest.

Scared Shrekless – 2010

Fans of the Shrek movies will love this Halloween spin. All the fairy tale creatures must spend a night in Lord Farquaad’s haunted castle. Some adult humor, but it goes right over little one’s heads.

Coco – 2017

An aspiring musician goes against his families wishes and ends up in the land of the dead. He must find a way to get back to the mortal world before the end of Dia de los Muertos. He learns lessons about family and tradition along the way.

Casper – 1995

A ghost therapist and his daughter move into a crumbling haunted house to try and therapize some grumpy spirits away.

Hotel Transylvania – 2012

The Hotel Transylvania is a resort for monsters only! Until a human makes his way inside. This movie actually as a part 2 and a part 3 that are pretty enjoyable.

Big Kid's Animated Halloween Movies

Once your kiddo is ready for a little bit spookier content, these animated movies are sure to provide plenty of thrills without too many chills!

The Nightmare Before Christmas – 1993

Jack Skelington is the King of Halloween. One year, he decides to take on Christmas instead. Many spooky and silly hijinks ensue. Bonus – This one’s great for Christmas, too!

Paranorman – 2012

An outcast boy who can communicate with the dead must try to save his town from an ancient curse.

Howl’s Moving Castle – 2004

A young woman is cursed to be trapped in an old woman’s body. She is offered the chance to break her curse and begins an adventure with a wizard and a fire demon in a castle with legs.

Frankenweenie – 2012

When a boys beloved weenie dog dies, he attempts to bring man’s best friend back to life through bizarre science experiments.

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride – 2005

A nervous, shy young man becomes accidentally betrothed to a corpse bride. They quickly discover all the ways their unusual relationship can, and can’t work.

Spirited Away – 2011

A young girl moving to the countryside stumbles into a strange world where humans are transformed into beasts and supernatural creatures are found at every turn.

Monster House – 2006

A group of friends discover that the neighborhood haunted house is actually a living monster.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower – 2018

A magical flower grants a young girl witchy powers for one night.

Kubo and the Two Strings – 2016

Kubo has an incredible ability to weave stories with music and origami. One day, he must seek out a suit of armor once owned by his father in order to save his remaining family from vengeful spirits.

Coraline – 2009

11 year old Coraline discovers a parallel world. At first, she thinks it’s way better than her normal, frustrating life. At first. This one can be a little bit creepy.

Big Kid's Live Action Halloween Movies

Many of these live action kid’s Halloween movies have some adult themes and spooky creatures, but they’re also tons of spooky fun!

Halloweentown – 1998

On her 13th birthday, Marnie discovers she’s a witch and follows her grandmother into Halloweentown to start her training. This one also has a part 2,  part 3, and part 4, though they’re not all winners.

Return to Oz – 1985

A mysterious girl breaks Dorothy out of a mental institution. Somehow, Dorothy ends up back in Oz trying to save her friends from a not so nice witch. Not Halloween, but kind of creepy.

Goosebumps – 2015

When famed spooky author, R.L. Stein’s creations invade reality, it’s up to a couple of teens to save their town.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks – 1971

An amateur witch, a group of children, and a cynical magician search for a missing spell ingredient that will help defend Britain during WWII.

Don’t Look Under the Bed – 1999

A young overachiever just trying to keep her feet on the ground must team up with her brother’s imaginary friend to save him from the Boogeyman.

Hocus Pocus – 1993

The witchy Sanderson Sisters are resurrected by a virgin on Halloween night. They have until morning to suck the lives out of all the children in Salem or disappear forever.

Monster Squad – 1987

A group of real life monsters chase down an amulet that will allow them to stay alive and take over the mortal world. Only the Monster Squad can stop them. This one is an 80’s kid’s movie, so it’s a little racier than kid’s movies today.

The Witches – 1990

Based on the beloved children’s book (trust me, this one’s always popular in the classroom), a young boy stumbles upon a witches convention that is plotting to rid the world of all children.

The Harry Potter series – 2001 to 2011

On his 11th birthday, Harry learns he is a wizard accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With his new supernatural friends, he get’s into trouble and tries to save Hogwarts from the ultimate evil force. 8 movies! They get darker as you go, so consider that when choosing what to watch.

The Addam’s Family – 1991

This creepy and kooky family has to stick together when their long-lost Uncle Fester returns from the Bermuda Triangle. As a bonus, there’s a sequel where Wednesday and Pugsly are sent to summer camp after Fester gets engaged! This bunch is every spooky kid’s grown up family goal.

Beetlejuice – 1988

Beetlejuice has some pretty adult themes, but outcast Lydia resonates so well with all those spooky at heart tweens out there. Lydia and her out of touch family move into a haunted house. The ghosts are fine. It’s Beetlejuice they have to worry about.

The Goonies – 1985

A group of misfits find a treasure map that takes them on a wild and somewhat creepy adventure. Another 80’s film, so keep that in mind when considering appropriateness for your kiddo.

Scooby Doo: The Movie – 2002

The gang is brought to Spooky Island  to investigate some mysterious goings on after a not so amicable split

Stardust – 2007

A young man embarks on a supernatural adventure to collect a fallen star for his (the worst ever) wife to be. To find it, he must venture through a magical but dangerous land.

Maleficent – 2014

The story of Sleeping Beauty told from the perspective of the the iconic villain who cursed her. A great witchy story with a few heartwarming twists.
