Merry Blogmas day 2! I’m so glad you’re back. Today, we’re going to look at how to make a gorgeous ornament tree without glue, frames, complicated tools, or stress.

I love decorating for the holidays. While Halloween will always be my favorite, there’s something magical about Christmas time. All the vibrant colors and sparkly glitter (so much glitter…) really make the season feel special.
This time of year, trees are a big theme, and holiday trees are definitely a strategy I’m using right now to help integrate the magic of my Christmas decor with the spookiness of my Halloween decor.
I wasn’t kidding when I said I was going to keep those Halloween decorations up this year!

Why Make an Ornament Tree?
One of my absolute favorite Christmas looks is little trees made of brightly colored ornaments. When looking to get a few several years back, I was a bit mind-blown at the challenge of trying to buy them.
First, I could hardly find any. The ones I did manage to dig up cost $50 or more. No thank you!
So I did what we all do and turned to the internet to solve my problem. Surely I could DIY an ornament tree.
A quick Google search pulled up plenty of ideas… That required paper cones and foam tree forms and copious amounts of hot glue. I still get overwhelmed just thinking about it!
But there was another logistical issue that arose with buying or making an ornament tree. How do you store these pricey pieces without smashing all the bulbs to smithereens and taking up ALL the available closet space? At the time, we were living in a smallish 1 bedroom apartment with almost no storage space.
I quickly realized what I’d need if I was going to pull off this trend. I came up with an idea that was affordable, super simple to do, and that could be disassembled and stored away in a tote.
And now, I’m here to share that discovery with you!
What You'll Need
The beauty in this design lies in its simplicity. You really don’t need much – very few materials and very little creative talent!
- Ball shaped Christmas ornaments in 2 or 3 sizes
- You’ll want to choose ornaments that are different sizes, but not too different to get the full effect.
- It’s also really helpful if you get ornaments that have the round, open cap hangers on them if possible. They’ve gotten exceedingly difficult to find, though, so you could also attach a loop of string, use small ornament hooks to make loops, or get new caps to replace the ones with the tiny holes.
- Knitting needles (or similarly shaped objects)
- The trick is to find ones that are tall enough to hold all your ornaments but thin enough that the ornament caps fit over them with a little wiggle room.
- You could probably also make this work with bamboo skewers and clay or cardboard and hot glue. I’ve never tried it, though.
Totally optional, but adds a nice touch
- A roll of pretty ribbon.
- Again, make sure your knitting needle fits through the hole in the roll. It’s even better if the cap of the knitting needle does not fit!

A cute set to try out if you like the rose gold look and want a little bit of texture in your design. They don’t have open caps, so you’ll need to use string, small hooks, or different caps.

This set also has a variety of textures, includes 3 sizes, and comes in 17 different color options, but each set is all the same color. They also don’t have open caps.
32 Count Christmas ball ornament set
I love this one because you get vibrant colors, varying textures, and round caps, which simplifies the process. They even come in bright purple, flaming red, or pitch black if you want to make some for Halloween, too!
101 count set with Christmas pickle
Ok, I’m kind of obsessed with this find because #1 – Christmas pickle. But also, you get a ton of ornaments in different textures and sizes, and they come in black, bronze, silver, gold, lime green, or white. The perfect colors to set up a Christmasween extravaganza.
The Process of Making Your Ornament Tree
- Start by threading the spool of ribbon onto your knitting needle to make the base of your tree. This step is purely decorative. You can skip it and still have a structurally sound ornament tree!
- Using your largest ornaments first, thread 4 or 5 of the caps/ribbons/hooks onto the needle to make a base. Arrange them so they sit flat on your surface.
- Continue this pattern, threading a second row of large ornaments that rest in the spaces between the first row.
- As you work your way up the needle, start mixing up larger and medium sized ornaments to create a narrower middle.
- Do the same with medium and small ornaments as you get to the top of the tree.
- Make sure to stop every so often and lift up the knitting needle just a bit to allow bulbs to settle together and establish a solid base.
- Take the cap off one of the small ornaments (or a decorative one like a small star, if you want) and use it to top your tree and finish off the look!
- When you’re ready to clean up your Christmas decor, just take your ornament tree apart, and store the bulbs back in their original box for compact safe keeping.
