Will Your Emergency Savings Actually Protect You in an Emergency?

You are currently viewing Will Your Emergency Savings Actually Protect You in an Emergency?

Show of hands. Was anyone else financially and emotionally unprepared for 2020? This year has rocked our worlds with all the back-to-back emergencies and disasters that just keep cropping up. This year, I am more convinced than ever that an emergency savings fund is vital to weathering unanticipated storms. (Pun intended. What is up with the weather this year?)

However, not all savings funds are created equal. If you lost your job in March, that $1,000 savings is long gone. A wildfire or hurricane tearing through your town probably means that cash on hand and home equity won’t be covering your expenses. Heck, even those rockstars among you with 6+ months of emergency savings might be feeling it right about now.

So, if we can’t really prepare for every imaginable (and unimaginable) situation, how can we ensure that our emergency savings can actually help to protect us in an emergency?

I’m so glad you asked. Let’s talk about the different types of emergency savings you should consider, and how much money to keep in each one.

*Quick note* If this year has battered and beaten you, today’s post might not be the best one for you. Check out this post instead, which offers up advice on how to cope with emergencies without an emergency fund. I will NEVER respond to someone’s tragedy by telling them they should have saved up first.

What is an Emergency Savings Fund?

Let’s start with the basics. An emergency savings fund is any collection of money or funds designed to get you through an unexpected emergency.

These funds can be cash on hand, money in the bank, or assets you can liquidate.  Personally, I recommend having a combination of savings options on hand since there’s really no way to guess what might happen.

First, let’s talk about some options for types of emergency savings. Then we’ll go over the duration of time to consider.

Cash On Hand

Cash on hand funds include the emergency savings you keep readily available in the form of physical money.

You don’t need to withdraw or transfer money to get them, and there’s no need to take time turning an asset into usable cash. It’s just … right there.

Bank Savings

This is emergency savings you keep sitting in your bank account, high yield (well, not anymore!) savings account, Paypal account, or other holding facilities.

You can access them quickly, usually within 1-3 days without too much trouble or a lot of leg work.

For some of you, this might also include investment accounts that allow you to withdraw funds or close accounts quickly and without penalty. I honestly don’t know enough about investing to confidently help you there.

Assets

Not everyone considers this category emergency savings, but I do.

Savings in assets are the things you own that aren’t money, but they have monetary value if you sell them.

This might be the value of your car, home, or investment accounts. It could also include the cost of any items in the home you could sell for quick cash.

Assets can be some of the biggest money holders for us, but they also tend to be the most unstable and difficult to access. There’s not necessarily a guarantee that we can get the money when we need it.

In a longer term emergency savings plan, assets can still be useful down the line. If I’m strapped with no solutions in sight, I can always try to sell my home/car or cash out an investment account. I don’t want to, but I can.

Why You Need Emergency Savings

Having an emergency savings helps you avoid a lot of stress and anxiety because you know you have options and can cover some surprises. Never forget this. Options equal freedom.

We all have different reasons why we want to build an emergency fund, but at the end of the day, to me, it’s all about preventing debt.

If you’re trying to dig your way out of debt, these funds are especially important since unexpected expenses might have caused your troubles in the first place. Could it have been poor judgement? Sure thing. For a lot of us, though, debt happens because something happened that we didn’t expect, and credit was our only option.

Few things feel more demoralizing than paying down a credit card only to fill it right back up again.

If you’re new to budgeting, you should also have some money saved away. Nobody masters their first month on a budget. Do not put yourself in the situation to fail, get into trouble, and quit. You will fail! I fail at budgeting all the time!

Emergency savings can also help you cover immediate, short term, or long term emergencies, depending on your needs.

Immediately Accessible Savings

Immediately accessible savings will nearly always be cash, though many people who have emergency food, water, and supplies stored away consider these essentials a part of their savings plan. Yes, this could also be part of your short or long term plan.

It makes sense. If you can’t afford to buy food right now, but you’ve got a month’s worth of food preps stored, you’re essentially saving yourself the stress of providing for that need. It’s as good as money your pocket.

Immediately accessible cash savings need to be money you can just grab and go. Maybe it’s the cash in your wallet, a few bills in the car or at work, an essential but often forgotten element of your get home bag, car kit, or 72 hour kit, or a box you keep to collect money from Facebook Marketplace sales… Because you’re an adult, and adults store their money in Sterilite boxes.

You might need access to immediate emergency savings for:

  • a medical emergency, illness, or bill
  • unexpected car or home repairs
  • your get home bag, 72 hour kid, or emergency car kit
  • an unexpected bill or charge
  • covering overdraft fees to prevent major banking problems
  • compensating for a low income month
  • a surprise project, field trip, or school event
  • holidays, birthdays, or other celebratory events
  • replacing essential items that break or wear out

Check out these links for more info about emergency bags and kits!

Short Term Emergency Savings

Your short term emergency savings is designed to keep you going in the event of an emergency or disaster that is short lived. With these situations, you expect life to return to (relative) normal again within a month or two.

You might need to access short term emergency savings for:

  • maternity or parental leave
  • surgical procedures or more serious illness/injury
  • shorter term job loss or leave of absence
  • a natural disaster that does limited damage
  • helping out a friend or family member

Long Term Emergency Savings

Long term emergency savings cover those situations where life has not returned to normal by about month number 3.

If you’ve been working through your situation comfortably up to this point, you should probably start to assume you are in survival mode, and make plan for what you’ll do in the coming months. These are the funds that will help you survive the emergency and give you protection and options as you plan your next move.

You might need to access long term emergency savings for:

  • long term job loss or disability situation
  • global pandemic
  • a highly destructive natural disaster or act of god
  • complicated pregnancy or delivery
  • life altering political or social event
  • a cinematic style end of the world scenario
  • food or supply shortage that skyrockets prices

The 6 Emergency Savings Plans You Need

In my opinion, these emergency savings plans will cover the majority of your bases. You’ll need to think about your circumstances, but I’ve included my preferred values for reference. Note that I said preferred. I’m still building a lot of these funds myself!

Every Day Carry Money

My recommendation: $50 – $100 in actual cash

It’s always prudent to have some cash in your wallet, purse, or phone case to cover an emergency on the go. If you forget your bank card, if your cards are declined, or if your job constantly collects money for Sunshine events, this type of cash on hand can really help you.

Not everyone accepts payment via cash apps right now. Save yourself trips to the bank or that irritating walk back to the car empty handed.

Stash It At Home Money

My recommendation: $200 – $500 in actual cash

I just feel better when I have cash on hand at home. We don’t need it very often, but when we do, it’s a lifesaver.

Suppose your spouse was recently hospitalized due to septic shock, and you have a one year old. Then, let’s say that your heater and hot water die simultaneously. Now let’s drop the temperature outside to below freezing. Cool, now fill the place with rats, and let’s also make it drafty A.F. Oh, and it’s midnight.

You’re lucky, though, because one of your contractor relatives knows a guy who can come work on it. At midnight. But it’s 50 degrees in your house, so you’re not going to say no. Let’s be real, though. The guy who can come work on your heating unit at midnight in freezing temps is going to be charging in cash.

Remember that baby? And that hospitalized spouse. You can’t drive to the bank to get money to pay this guy. Thank god you’ve got some cash on hand for emergencies.

I DEEPLY wish this were the fictional ramblings of a deranged mind, but this nonsense actually happened to me last autumn.

You could also consider a more plausible story, like a tornado rips through your neighborhood, cutting off power to the half of town with the grocery store. Y’all, that store doesn’t close. They just transform into a cash based economy. You can still buy some essentials if you’ve got cash on hand and can get there first. (Also a little nonfiction entertainment from my life!)

Anyway, my point is that we have no way of knowing what kind of insanity life will throw at us, so keep some cash at home just in case.

Get Home Bag or Emergency Car Kit Money

My recommendation: enough to pay for for a tank of gas or cab ride home, a meal, and some water in actual cash

For me, $50 is plenty, but I drive a hatchback Yaris. $20 fills my tank twice and takes me a 500 miles. Calculate based on your vehicle or cost of living.

If you drive, you want to have emergency cash for when you’re on the road.

I like to keep this money in my car instead of my get home bag, and here’s why. Part of my get home bag is actually an every day carry kit that goes everywhere with me. Work, the grocery store, visits with friends and family… My every day carry money is already located here.

I need cash in my car, but I don’t want to have all the money there in case I’m stranded and my car is destroyed. The odds of this are slim, but I do live in tornado alley. I’m far enough from home that if a tornado hit my area, and I survived but my car did not, I might have to walk a good distance before I could find another way home.

If my car runs out of gas on the way home, but I forget my wallet, (I’m not about to admit how often this happens!) I need to have guaranteed money to get me home.

I don’t know if I made that clear, so to sum up … I keep every day carry money in a kit that is part of my get home bag, and I keep emergency car money in my car kit. This way, I’m covered either way.

Short Term Emergency Money in the Bank

I believe you should always have extra money in your bank! This is how you avoid overdraft fees that put you further in debt and ruin your best budgeting intentions. Stick some money in there that you don’t touch!

My recommendation: One month’s income or one month’s bare minimum expenses in the bank

If you’ve been around for a while, you know I love living on last month’s income! I started budgeting this way nearly a decade ago, and it changed my financial life. Putting a full month’s income right in the bank is just personal preference. This could also be where you stash a small emergency savings while you build up your one month’s savings.

Having a month’s expenses covered and in the bank already really brings me peace of mind because if I lose my job suddenly, it gives me the rest of the current month plus the whole next month to deal with the shock and get my bearings while I make a plan for what to do.

It’s an automatic 30-60 day contingency plan.

Pin it for later!

how well is your emergency fund actually protecting you?

Short Term Emergency Money in Savings

My recommendation: 2-3 additional month’s expenses or as a place to save money toward your goals in a savings account

Now, one month’s worth of expenses might not be enough to make you feel comfortable in the short term, or you might not like having wads of cash in the bank. I like to store my additional savings in a “high yield” savings account. This year, the rates on savings accounts are tanking. I’m looking at some alternatives, but I’m not going to pass up free money in the mean time.

Putting money into savings is a good idea if you want access to larger sums of money within a few days or if you’re saving up for a big goal.

Out of sight, out of mind really helps with saving. You’re less likely to spend that money when it’s not immediately available.

A couple extra month’s worth of money will also help give you options if your immediate emergency stretches out longer than anticipated.

Long Term Savings and Assets

My recommendation: It’s complicated… and have a backup plan

The standard for a long term savings account used to be 6 months of expenses. Then COVID happened. It’s been 7 months, and there’s no end in sight. So many people who were furloughed or lost their jobs in March are still unemployed.

You can feel however you feel about this, but please don’t blast my comment section with nonsense about getting a neuroscience education online to improve your job prospects. It’s not helpful.

The point I’m trying to make is that 2020 proved the old standard unreliable. 6 month’s expenses in savings is an incredible feat, and it doesn’t come easy. Unfortunately, it might not be enough.

How much of a cushion you want and where you choose to keep it is really up to you and determined by your circumstances. Ultimately, I think the most important variable here is to have a back up plan. What is your worst case scenario, and what will you do if it happens?

Maybe that means a one year (or more) emergency savings fund. It could be owning investment properties to sell off or collect rental income. If you know your stuff, you could build an investment portfolio that allows you to live off the earnings during tough times. Maybe you focus on paying off all your debts and going totally self sustaining, eliminating the need for a large income. Even a side hustle or secondary income stream could be part of your long term savings plan.

Choose a plan that works for you, and start saving!

Create Your Emergency Savings Plan Today

6 emergency savings plans seems like a lot, but when you break everything down to it’s basic parts, it’s really not quite as much as it seems.

We can’t anticipate what tomorrow will bring. 2020 probably isn’t quite finished with us yet. I, for one, won’t be assuming that my job and lifestyle are securely set in stone, so I’m working hard to adjust my finances and set up contingencies.

If you’re in a tough spot right now, I truly hope that you find some relief soon.

However, if, like me, this year hasn’t hit you like a financial ton of bricks yet, I encourage you to start paying down those debts and establish a multi-faceted savings plan. The worst that happens is that you get rid of debt and add a little financial security to your situation.

UkraineNow, SPRAVDI.

Emergency funds are so important! Here in Australia, we have a down-to-earth financial guru (which makes him sound dodgy but he’s not) called Barefoot Investor who says everyone should have a Mojo fund- so if the shit hits the fan you’re able to support yourself rather than being reliant on loans or credit cards- which is so important! If you’re in financial difficulty, the last thing you should be doing is getting into debt- and having some ‘mojo’ helps to avoid that 🙂 Great piece, I really enjoy personal finances and budgeting so a good read!

I’ve never heard it called a mojo fund before, but I love that! Totally agree, though. Some extra cash set aside can make a huge difference in reaching our goals.
